Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used to rescue critically ill infants and children for more than 50 years. Despite technological advances and clinical innovations, morbidity and mortality associated with ECMO support in this vulnerable population remain unacceptably high. In this session, speakers will highlight the observational, interventional, and adaptive clinical studies that are under way or being planned, with the goal of improving patient outcomes in pediatric ECMO.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the challenges of conducting observation and interventional clinical trials in neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Recognize the networks of investigators contributing to advancement of pediatric ECMO
  • Identify causes of morbidity, mortality, and poor long-term outcomes in pediatric ECMO
  • Summarize subject identification, recruitment, randomization, and protocol adherence for the optimal conduct of clinical trials
  • Analyze the benefits of innovative trial designs aimed at accelerating knowledge acquisition to improve clinical care of vulnerable populations
