Associate Professor of Medicine
Baylor College of Medicine
Houston, Texas
I am board certified in both adult and pediatric critical care medicine and have been on faculty teaching and practicing both specialties since 2008, initially at the University of Miami, then a decade at the University of Pittsburgh and now at the Baylor College of Medicine. I have a long track record of translational research aimed at protecting the heart and brain from global ischemic injury, such as that seen clinically in cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary bypass. I have engaged in lab-based experimentation and phase 1 and 2 randomized placebo controlled interventional clinical trials. I have been active in education, directing or co-directing fellowship training in cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology/mechanical ventilation, journal club/evidence-based medicine, a medical school resuscitation track and an American Heart Association funded undergraduate research program. I am presently the co-chair of the AHA Drowning Guidelines Update and the 2025 CPR Systems of Care writing groups. I direct the adult congenital heart disease unit at Texas Children's where we provide cutting edge care for patients aged 16 and up who have congenital heart disease. I also attend in the pediatric cardiac ICU and the adult cardiothoracic ICU at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. I am married since 2011 to Audra and we have 3 children (2 boys, 1 girl). I am active in my church, the CMDA, and serve on faculty for a medical missionary educational conference and volunteer in a local clinic (Casa El Buen Samaritano).
