(476) T2 Bacteria Panel Identifies 2.99 Times More On-Panel Bacteria Versus Conventional Blood Culture

Introduction: The T2Bacteria Panel is an FDA cleared and CE marked culture independent in vitro diagnostic test that identifies common bacterial causes of bacterial sepsis utilizing T2 magnetic resonance technology. The T2Bacteria FDA cleared panel detects Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli within 3-5 hours. The CE marked panel has one additional target, Acinetobacter baumannii. The T2Bacteria panel has been demonstrated to be highly sensitive with a sensitivity of 90% and a limit of detection (LoD) of 2-11 CFU/mL. The purpose of this study is to quantify the rate at which T2Bacteria detects on-panel species compared to blood culture in studies evaluating T2Bacteria.

Methods: Publications, presentations, and abstracts evaluating the T2Bacteria Panel were systematically screened and included if the study reported organism level detection data for both the T2Bacteria panel and conventional blood cultures. Studies were excluded if on-panel organism level data were not available for the T2Bacteria panel and/or conventional blood cultures. Data relating to Candida species and the T2Candida Panel were excluded from analyses. The primary outcome is the ratio of on-panel organisms identified overall by the T2Bacteria panel compared to conventional blood cultures.

Results: Fifteen studies met inclusion criteria with publication dates ranging from 2018 to 2023. Three studies were from the United States and twelve studies were from outside of the US. Patient populations including intensive care, emergency department, hematology/oncology, and pediatrics were included. Across 15 studies, a total of 3,135 T2Bacteria panel results were reported. The T2Bacteria panel identified 627 on-panel organisms compared to 210 identifications from conventional blood cultures. Thus, the T2Bacteria panel identified 2.99 times more on-panel organisms than conventional blood cultures.

Conclusions: The highly sensitive T2Bacteria panel identified more on-panel organisms than conventional blood cultures across 15 clinical studies.
