Monica I. Lupei, MD, graduated from the "Victor Babes" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timisoara, Romania. She moved to the United States in 2005 after completing training in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care in Romania. She was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow before enrolling in the Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Minnesota in 2008. Her passion for ICU brought her to Northwestern University in Chicago for the Critical Care Fellowship.
Dr. Lupei returned to the University of Minnesota in 2014, eager to dedicate her professional time to complex scholarly activities. In 2022, Dr. Lupei was promoted to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Lupei's academic interests include:
• Critical care outcome research.
• Anesthesiology Critical Care education.
• Global Health advocacy.
• Quality Improvement.
Monica Lupei has broad leadership experience. She was the Director of the Anesthesiology M&M Conference between 2017 and 2022. Dr. Lupei was the Medical Director at M Health Fairview Ridges ICU between 2018 and 2021 and again starting in January 2023. In 2021, she was appointed the UMMC West ICU Medical Director. In 2021, she became the Anesthesiology Critical Care Fellowship Program Director at the University of Minnesota.
Monica Lupei participated in multiple surgical camps in Kampala, Uganda, and led elective rotations in Uganda for the University of Minnesota Anesthesiology trainees. Dr. Lupei is the Global Health Leader for the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota.
Since 2018, Monica Lupei has been active within the SCCM Anesthesiology Section. Dr. Lupei was the Chair of the Communication Subcommittee between 2021 and 2023. In 2022, Dr. Lupei joined the Anesthesiology Section Steering Committee.
Monica Lupei believes the role of Critical Care Anesthesiologist will evolve and expand at the clinical, educational, research, advocacy, and hospital leadership level.
