Post Doctoral Research Fellow
Virginia Commonwealth University Health System
Richmond, VA
Loren K. Liebrecht, MD, MS is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Surgery and School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA, USA. Having trained with her mentor Dr. Martin Mangino, PhD since 2015, Dr. Liebrecht has studied ischemia reperfusion injury as it relates to critical illness and pre-clinical resuscitation practices using PEG-20k solutions in models of shock, including: hemorrhagic shock, septic shock, splanchnic shock, coagulopathy of trauma, and organ donation. After completing her first post-doctoral fellowship (2015-2017) in ischemia reperfusion injury, organ preservation, and coagulation sciences, Loren was accepted to the VCU Internal Medicine Residency where she completed her Internship training. Deciding to persue a translational research career, Dr. Liebrecht returned to the Mangino Laboratory in 2020 to complete a second Post-Doctoral Fellowship and help commercialize the PEG-20k resuscitation solution that she helped develop and patent with Dr. Mangino. Since 2020, she has maintained an unpaid position with Perfusion Medical, Inc., the biotechnology company formed by Dr. Mangino and Gerard Eldering, MBA to commercialize the PEG-20k IV Solution (i.e. PM-208), as first Chief Medical Officer (2020-2022) and then Chief Research Medical Officer (2022-current). In 2024, Dr. Liebrecht will be transitioning to Research Scientist in the Department of Surgery at VCU, and then hopefully to Junior Research Faculty later in the year pending NIH R01 funding. Additionally, Dr. Liebrecht will continue to aid Perfusion Medical, Inc. in submitting an investigational new drug (IND) application to the FDA to start first-in-human clinical trials in 2025.
