Derek S. Wheeler, MD, MMM, MBA is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer / Chief Medical Officer at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and the Crown Family Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Wheeler graduated from Purdue University with degrees in Movement and Sports Science (Exercise Physiology) and Biology. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed pediatrics residency training at Naval Medical Center, San Diego. Dr. Wheeler served as a general pediatrician for 3 years in the U.S. Navy on the island of Guam and later at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He remained on active reserve for the Navy while in training as a pediatric critical care medicine fellow at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He joined the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Georgia after fellowship and was then recruited back to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center as an attending physician in the Division of Critical Care Medicine, where he spent the next 16 years. Dr. Wheeler became the Associate Chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Chief of Staff at Cincinnati Children’s. Dr. Wheeler completed a Masters in Medical Management at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Wheeler is a Fellow in the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and his professional interests include quality improvement, patient safety, and high reliability organizations.
