Dr. Raul J. Gazmuri, M.D., Ph.D., FCCM, is a Critical Care Physician, Professor of Medicine, Physiology & Biophysics, and Director of the Resuscitation Institute at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS), and Section Chief of Critical Care Medicine and ICU Director at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC).
Dr. Gazmuri obtained his MD degree and completed Internal Medicine training in Chile before traveling to the United States in 1986 for a research fellowship at today’s RFUMS under the mentorship of late Professor Max Harry Weil. Dr. Gazmuri devoted three years as a full-time research fellow and five additional years as a Critical Care Fellow, Ph.D. student, and junior faculty under Dr. Weil’s mentorship. In 1994, he earned his Ph.D. degree in Physiology & Biophysics and in 1997 he was inducted Fellow of the American College of Critical Care.
As Director of the Resuscitation Institute at RFUMS, he leads basic and preclinical research on acute life-threatening events. At FHCC, he leads a mixed Critical Care Unit and pioneered the development of a Rapid Response System based on a single early warning sign activation. Dr. Gazmuri has contributed to the field of Resuscitation and Critical Care Medicine with more than 200 publications and received – as primary and/or senior author – multiple awards at scientific meetings. He has served as a member of the BLS, the ACLS, and the Scientific Subcommittees of the AHA ECC Committee and as a member of ILCOR. He is currently a member of the Resuscitation Science Symposium organizing committee and frequently serves on VHA and NIH Study Sections.
In 2017, Dr. Gazmuri founded Resuscitation Therapeutics, Inc. with the goal of translating promising new therapies and strategies for life-threatening medical emergencies in pre-hospital and hospital settings in civilian and military environments.
