Joan Hoch Kinniry, MSN, RN, ACNP is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the Department of Medical Critical Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). Joan joined the Medical Intensive Care (MICU) team at HUP in 1996 as a RN. Joan continued her career as a MICU Nurse Practitioner upon completion of her MSN from The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 2004. Joan served as the Lead NP for the MICU Advanced practice Provider team, and in 2016, Joan became the Advanced Practice Manager for the HUP Medical Critical Care Advanced Practice Program and the Procedure and Critical Care Consultation Services. Joan currently manages two APP staffed MICU's with 18 beds and the Procedure Consultation service with a team of 37 APP's.
Joan is passionate about quality improvement and safety. As a RN, Joan was involved in the development of early nurse driven protocol development for Heparin infusion and Insulin infusion. As a provider, she developed a DKA treatment guideline implemented across multiple Penn Medicine entities. Her recent projects include reduce variations in practice around bedside procedures, reducing time to liberation from mechanical ventilation, and reducing time to administration of STAT antibiotics.
