Dr. Ariane Lewis is a Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Director of the Division of Neurocritical Care at NYU Langone Medical Center. As an expert on end-of-life social, ethical and legal controversies related to death by neurologic criteria, she was an author of the 2023 AAN/AAP/CNS/SCCM Brain Death/Death by Neurologic Criteria guidelines, served on the Steering Committee for the World Brain Death Project, was an International Advisor to the Canadian Critical Care Society Definition and Determination of Death Committee and an observer on the Determination of Death Act Drafting Committee. She edited the book, “Death Determination by Neurologic Criteria: Areas of Consensus and Controversy.” She is also the Chair of the NYU Langone Medical Center Ethics Committee, the Past Chair of the Neurocritical Care Society Ethics Committee and a member of the American Academy of Neurology Ethics, Law and Humanities Committee. Dr. Lewis has over 150 publications and is the Co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Clinical Neuroscience and the Deputy Editor for both the Disputes and Debates section of Neurology and Seminars in Neurology. Dr. Lewis was awarded the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Innovative Award for Teaching Excellence for her work in developing educational simulation sessions focused on interprofessional communication and professionalism and the NYU Neurology Innovator Award for her leadership during the pandemic. Dr. Lewis was chosen to be a Fellow in the American Academy of Neurology and the Neurocritical Care Society due to her clinical and scholarly leadership in neurocritical care.
