Early on in my fellowship training I developed a fascination with hemostasis, particularly in platelet function and physiology. This interest led me to the Hematology Service at NIH where the senior staff all investigated various elements of hemostasis. My research focused on the interactions of von Willebrand factor with platelets in regulating clot formation. Due to a close connection with several of the intensivists at NIH at that time, my clinical interests migrated toward hemostatic abnormalities in the critically-ill - something I refer to as "Critical Care Hematology", and it was this interest that led me to become a member of SCCM. That clinical focus stayed with me on my recruitment to Stony Brook, and ultimately led to my involvement in PALISI. Since retirement, my involvement in PALISI has enabled me to stay connected and remain active in this field.
