As intensive care professionals become increasingly involved in donor management, it is imperative to apply the same rigor to the care of organ donors that is applied to the care of living patients. Standardized practices and guidelines regarding early identification, details of death declaration, ethical considerations, and complete critical care of potential organ donors are essential. This session covers all aspects of identifying, declaring, and managing the potential organ donor in the ICU.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize the sequence of evolving neurologic injury and terminal events to allow for early intervention and organ preservation
Describe protocol interventions to preserve cardiovascular, pulmonary, and endocrine stability in the potential organ donor
Discuss the unique processes and ethical considerations for declaration of death in the pediatric and adult patient regardless of causation
