Clinical research has long been plagued by bias and stigma. From the management and diagnosis of hypertension and laboratory tests for kidney disease to monitoring respiratory failure through pulse oximetry, real-world evidence has helped to uncover health disparities in a wide range of clinical settings. In the rapidly evolving world of critical care, data science solutions can help incorporate data elements to provide better context for traditional measures of health equity. For example, social drivers of health (SDoH) can help researchers improve interpretations of disparities between race and ethnic categories, promoting more equitable policy solutions.
