Drug shortages specifically related to nutrition support have plagued hospitals for several years. Implementation of conservation strategies in addition to criteria for use are integral to managing provision of appropriate nutrition support in critically ill patients. Dosing strategies for both macronutrients and trace elements will be reviewed in the face of multiple shortages.
Learning Objectives:
Identify patient risk factors for deficiencies related to drug shortages
Determine parenteral nutrition dosing strategies in the face of shortages of macronutrients such as amino acids, lipids, and dextrose
Identify patients at risk for micronutrient deficiencies and implement conversation strategies for trace elements and other micronutrients
