Optimal timing of ECMO support for children with respiratory failure is unknown - too early, and the patients are exposed to the consequences of ECMO support; too late, and the patients are exposed to the consequences of hypoxemia and barotrauma. Dr. Barbaro is the PI of an NHLBI-funded registry-embedded clinical trial (ASCEND) which hopes to address this clinical question. He will discuss the novel trial design which has leveraged prospective acquisition of real world evidence.
