Of the more than 6 million American adults living with heart failure, about 10 percent have advanced heart failure. Of the 3,000 people in the US currently listed for heart transplant, 20% will die awaiting transplant. Such patients commonly require critical care admission, but only a minority will ever be listed for transplant or receive a new heart. In this session, we will review common indications and contraindications to cardiac transplant and identify those patients suitable for referral.
