(1101) Pediatric ICU Resident Curriculum Development With Asynchronous Microlearning Using Social Media

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to develop a novel social media-based pediatric critical care (PICU) curriculum for pediatric residents. The curriculum uses asynchronous micro-learning to supplement more classical, synchronous resident learning. This study leverages popular social media sites to disseminate information in quick, bite-sized videos to the residents at the University of California, Irvine/Children's Hospital of Orange County (UCI/CHOC). This asynchronous nature provides 'on-demand' learning and works well with the busy schedules of residents. The micro/nano-learning style of videos facilitates quick understanding, and better retention and serves as a great avenue to pique resident interests in PICU.

Methods: The PICU TikTok (PicTalk) curriculum was developed using Kern's 6 steps of curriculum development. It involved case-based scenarios and used TikTok for filming in the simulation suite. Over the course of 4 weeks, 4 core PICU topics were discussed. Every week, a series of videos were shared on Twitter, TikTok and Instagram on a topic. The videos, each up to 3 min long, were shared on a set schedule throughout the week. They were spread out throughout the week to maximize interaction and sustain interest. They involved case introductions, pathophysiology discussions and disease management. For each topic, links to supporting articles highlighting management guidelines were posted. To promote organic interactions and engagement, daily questions were posted too. Faculty feedback was constantly taken into account to fine-tune the video length and presentation to optimize for better engagement.

Results: All residents appreciated the ability to interact on social media. They identified that the case-based scenarios helped to easily understand the complex PICU topics. They reported that breaking up the videos on different days helped in engagement. All preferred shorter nano-videos ( < 1 min) to longer micro-videos (2-3 min). At the end of the program, the feedback was overtly positive and was reflected by high engagement metrics on social media.

Conclusions: PicTalk is a useful guide for residents to review important PICU topics asynchronously. In the future, it can be a valuable resource for educators/learners and can be implemented in X+Y scheduling models to track resident progress.
