As emergency care has matured around the world, including in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) over the past two decades, a new challenge has arisen: After initial resuscitation, many hospitals in LMICs are poorly equipped to provide ongoing critical care. At the same time, critical care research has been mostly focused on the treatment of critical illness in high-income settings, and the implementation of concepts derived in the United States or Europe in low-resource settings can have disastrous consequences for patients and resource management.
