The number of critically ill patients in emergency departments (EDs) is rising. The boarding time of critically ill patients in the ED is also longer, exacerbated by the nursing shortage during the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies have shown an increase in mortality of critically ill patients with delayed transfer to the ICU. Therefore, multiple institutions have created resuscitation units to provide early and high-quality ICU-level care to these patients. The topic of resuscitation will be discussed in a fast-paced review of multiple institutions featuring different types of resuscitation units such as ED-based, ICU-based, and consultation models.
