Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) use has increased dramatically and has become an essential component of assessing patients with shock and respiratory failure. Despite widespread use, accessibility, and significant decreases in cost of ultrasound equipment, acquisition of devices and image management systems remain major capital expenses. To achieve sustainability, professional and facility billing charges for services allow offset costs and over time become profitable. Currently, only a limited number of critical care programs can develop successful billing practices as part of ultrasound management.
