Status epilepticus (SE) is a neurologic emergency with a high mortality rate. Fast progression of SE and lack of response to traditional antiseizure mediations in many cases has challenged clinicians to use new agents. Understanding the mechanism of action, dosing strategies, adverse effects, monitoring parameters, and evidence regarding efficacy of these agents in SE, as well as knowing the most appropriate patient population to target is crucial.

Learning Objectives:

Review mechanism of action, adverse effects, and common monitoring parameters of new antiseizure medications
Explain dosing strategies in status epilepticus (SE) and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic considerations in critically ill patients, including those undergoing extracorporeal therapy such as renal replacement therapy or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and those with organ dysfunction such as renal or liver failure undergoing hemodialysis
Create a comprehensive pharmacologic plan based on available evidence to use in a patient with SE not responding to first-line therapy
