Induced Immunosuppression in the ICU

Acutely ill patients can acquire immunodeficiencies through a variety of etiologies common to the ICU. This session will focus on the impact of immunology from hypoxia, mechanical ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, pathogens, and nutrition.

  • Identify immunologic insufficiency associated with mechanical ventilation
  • Discuss immunosupression related to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
  • Compare and contrast pathogen-induced immunology changes in critically ill patients
  • Explain the impact of nutritional alterations on acquired immunodeficiency
