The incidence and rate of pediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE) has been increasing rapidly, particularly in critically ill children. Because of the historic paucity of evidence-based literature and reliance on extrapolated adult studies, pediatric critical care practices regarding risk analysis, prevention and treatment of VTE vary. Updated information on predictive risk assessment, ongoing studies on effectiveness of hospital-acquired VTE prevention efforts, and new treatment modalities will inform evidence-based prevention and standard of care.
