Opioid misuse has been a major public health problem over the past decades. Studies have shown association of surgical procedures and ICU admission to prolonged opioid use, which can lead to adverse effects and potential for long-term misuse. Opioids are commonly used for pain and sedation management in critical care and are recommended by guidelines. ICU clinicians often must navigate appropriate pain management while mitigating the detrimental effects of opioids. This session will provide an overview of the problem caused by opioid misuse and how to promote appropriate and safe use of opioids during critical illness and beyond.
