José L. Díaz-Gómez, MD, MAS, FCCM, FASE, is the Section Chief, Cardiovascular, MCS, and Transplant Critical Care, the Anesthesia/Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program Director at The Texas Heart Institute – Baylor St Luke’s Medical Center, Houston, Texas. He was a former Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. And he is in the review process for academic promotion as a Professor of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. Díaz-Gómez completed his medical training at the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana, Colombia, and a post-graduate anesthesiology residency at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He then completed a critical care fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He also pursued further training in cardiac anesthesia at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. His previous positions include cardiothoracic anesthesiologist and intensivist at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, Medical Director of the Surgical ICU, and Chair of the Critical Care Department at the Mayo Clinic in Florida. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with added qualifications in neurocritical care (United Council of Neurological Specialties), and the National Board of Echocardiography - Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography and Critical Care Echocardiography.
Dr. Díaz-Gómez currently co-leads the upcoming critical care ultrasonography guidelines within the SCCM. And he serves as co-chair of a forthcoming POCUS Nomenclature Statement by the American Society of Echocardiography. He works closely with all intensivists of different professional backgrounds for authentic collaboration with advanced cardiac imaging specialists. Furthermore, he led a SCCM multidisciplinary team that provided the most extended continuous critical care ultrasound training in Ukraine in 2023. Lastly, he received a master’s in applied science at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at John Hopkins University. He is the first Task Force leader for Immigrant Critical Care Professionals within the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
