Alex Kon, MD, HEC-C, FAAP, FCCM is Medical Director of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Community Children’s, Chair of the Department of Women’s and Children’s Services at Community Medical Center, and Clinical Professor (voluntary) of Pediatrics and Bioethics at University of Washington School of Medicine,. Dr. Kon has served as President of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities, Lead of Health Care Ethics for the US Military Health System, Chair of the SCCM Ethics Committee, Chair of the NCRR CTSA Consortium Clinical Research Ethics Committee, and Member of the US FDA Pediatric Ethics Subcommittee. Dr. Kon is a pediatric intensivist and a certified healthcare ethics consultant with over 25 years experience in pediatric critical care medicine and in clinical ethics consultation.
Dr. Kon has authored or co-authored over 100 journal articles and book chapters on pediatric critical care, pediatric end-of-life care, and ethics-related topics. He has chaired and participated in multiple SCCM guideline task forces including the ATS/AACN/ACCP/ESICM/SCCM policy statement on responding to requests for potentially inappropriate treatments; the SCCM policy statement defining futile and potentially inappropriate interventions; the SCCM/ATS shared decision-making policy statement; the SCCM family-centered care guidelines; and the SCCM pediatric shock guidelines.
