Sofya H. Asfaw, MD, MBA, FACS is an Assistant Professor of Surgery of Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. She specializes in Trauma Surgery, Critical Care and Emergency General Surgery. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, her medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, a residency in General Surgery at Cleveland Clinic and fellowships in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at The University of Pennsylvania. She is also a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University, earning a Master of Business Administration with an additional Certificate in Healthcare Leadership. Dr. Asfaw is a member of numerous professional organizations, serves on many national committees and is currently the President of the Cleveland Surgical Society. She practices clinically at several Cleveland Clinic hospitals. She serves as the Vice Chair for Wellness and Diversity in the Department of General Surgery and is the Digestive Disease Institute’s Lead for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In addition, she is the Trauma and Surgical Intensive Care Unit Medical Director at Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital. Dr. Asfaw is involved in student, trainee and fellow education and has numerous roles including Associate Clerkship Director, Associate Program Director with a focus on Wellness and Mentorship and the immediate past Kenneth Lee Memorial Fellowship Director – a fellowship dedicated to healthcare sustainability. Dr. Asfaw has also authored or co-authored several publications related to topics in trauma, critical care, healthcare sustainability and DEI.
