Carmel A. McComiskey DNP, PPCNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN is the Associate Chief Clinical Officer and Director of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants at University of Maryland Medical Center. She holds a faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland SON, and Instructor at the University of Maryland SOM. She is the co-chair of the Graduate Education and Practice committee of the UM Nursing partnership.
Carmel works clinically in pediatric surgery and urology. In 2007, she initiated a NP managed Center for Bowel and Bladder Care, and sees patients with both daytime and nocturnal enuresis and encopresis.
In addition to serving on numerous councils at UMMC, Carmel is a member of organizations including Society of Critical Care Medicine, Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners, and American Pediatric Surgical Nurses' Association, an organization where she was a charter member, served on its Board of Directors for many years and served as its president from 1999 to 2000. She was the recipient of the 2007 APSNA Founder's award. Most recently, she worked with the ANA to revise the scope and standards of pediatric nurses and advanced practice nurses. She was awarded fellowship in the AANP in 2014 and in the AAN in 2015. She has given many professional presentations and published articles in many journals. She is an editor of Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient and served as the Associate Editor of Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care from 2010-2013, and the editiorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing. She often provides consultation about structures that support NP/PA practice.
