Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin
Kristin K. Magner, CPNP-AC/PC, APNP is a critical care pediatric nurse practitioner affiliated with the Medical College of Wisconsin and Children's Wisconsin. She is the lead advanced practice provider for the medical oncology critical care unit and one of her primary interests is the collaboration among hematology/oncology/bone marrow transplant and critical care teams. This collaboration allowed for the development of the Sedated Collection Guidelines. Kristin's other primary interest is using her clinical and academic experience to better understand providers’ perception of family distress. There are many factors that contribute to how providers understand families’ perception of illness and their ability to manage stress and distress. Her previous research focused on providers’ understanding of mothers’ perception of their child’s illness. This project resulted in multiple presentations including a international conference podium presentation, national conference podium and poster presentation, and a first author peer-reviewed manuscript and abstract publication. Just as providers may not always understand a mother's perception of her child’s illness, providers may not always recognize and understand family distress.
Kristin is an original member of the multi-institutional collaborative, Milwaukee Collaborative for Resilience and Emotional Wellness Science (Milwaukee CREWS) that was founded in 2019 and is working towards better understanding stress, distress, and the psychological impact in families with pediatric patients in the PICU. This group has presented nationally on Community Parents Perceptions of the PICU, Perceptions of Family Distress in the PICU, and Medical Provider Perspectives on Psychosocial Support for Parents in the PICU. They have received internal funding for future research in the areas of Psychological Safety in the PICU and Using Text Messaging to Understand Traumatic Stress and Mental Health in Parents of PICU Patients. Kristin is involved in a pilot program to bring Child Psychology into the PICU and support families.
