Dr. Sam Tisherman is a Professor of Surgery and the Program in Trauma, University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is Director of the Center for Critical Care and Trauma Education and the Director of the Surgical Intensive Care and Surgical Intermediate Care Units of the University of Maryland Medical Center. He completed his undergraduate degree in Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and medical school, general surgery residency, and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He spent 20 years on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as the Director of the Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program and Director of the Neurotrauma ICU, before moving to the University of Maryland in 2014. Working with Drs. Peter Safar and Pat Kochanek, Dr. Tisherman's research has focused on Emergency Preservation and Resuscitation, a novel approach to managing the dying trauma patient utilizing hypothermia to "buy time" for resuscitative surgery.
