Resident Physician
The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education
My name is Muhammad Hassan Shakir and I am an Internal Medicine Resident and PGY-2 Internal Medicine Resident Leader at the Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education in Scranton, PA. I did my Medicine degree from Shifa College of Medicine in Islamabad, Pakistan and did my internship from Shifa International Hospital, one of only 3 JCI acreddited tertiary care centers in the country. I developed a passion for Critical Care Medicne during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was in Pakistan and doing my internship, when I fell in love with the dynamic environment of the 3 ICUs I worked in. I take a keen interest in respiratory physiology and breathing mechanics especially in the context of Invasive Mechanical Vetilation, where I like to take the lead in managing ventilators for my patients in close collaboration with respiratory therapy service. My ongoing research works include a comparison of mortality and secondary outcomes of percutaneous versus surgical ECMO, evaluation of racial differences in outcomes of EVALI and a brief case series on management of compressive mediastinal masses presenting with respiratory failure and ostructive shock and the role of ECMO. I am traveling to Arizona for the prestigious Critical Care Congress to present an extremely rare and interesting presentation that I came accross in our ICU, and immediately wanted to share my experience with this case with the Critical Care family. I will be applying for Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship in the upcoming match cycle, and hope to realize my long dream of becoming a Critical Care attending.
