As a physician-scientist, my broad research focus is to understand the role of inflammation in cardiovascular disease and to investigate how quelling inflammation may mitigate cardiovascular risk. I have utilized chronic inflammatory diseases associated with elevated cardiovascular risk as human models to study inflammatory atherogenesis. I also have an interest in examining the value of novel blood and imaging biomarkers in predicting cardiovascular disease in these vulnerable populations of chronic inflammatory disease patients. In the past, we have leveraged longitudinal cohort studies of patients with inflammatory diseases to demonstrate that mitigating inflammation with biological anti-inflammatory therapy may be associated with a reduction in indices of early subclinical atherosclerosis.
