Prof. Nilesh Mehta is the Vice Chair of Quality and Outcomes, and Chair for Nutrition and metabolism in the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He is Associate Medical Director of the Medical Surgical ICU, at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Prof. Mehta’s research is focused on improving outcomes in critically ill children. In addition to leading the Departmental Quality and Outcomes efforts, he is engaged in a variety of research projects in this area. He is the executive director of the PICU – CLOUD, an international collaborative platform for benchmarking of PICU outcomes.
Prof. Mehta’s area of clinical expertise is in the domain of nutritional and metabolic aspects of critical illness in children. He founded the institutional critical care nutrition program in 2008. The central focus of Prof. Mehta’s research is optimal nutrition therapy and its impact on outcomes in critically ill children. His has studied and described the metabolic response to stress, energy and protein metabolism, changes in body composition and strategies to optimize nutrient intake in children with critical illness, injury and following surgery. He is the Past-President of the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN).
