Dr. Powers
University of Florida
Emma Powers is a second-year medical student at the University of Florida College of Medicine, entering through the Medical Honors Program. In her undergraduate years, she spent her time volunteering with the patients in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU) at UFHealth which piqued her interest in the Berlin Heart and pediatric cardiology. She began researching patients with single ventricle physiology supported by the Berlin Heart for her undergraduate thesis with her mentor, Dr. Joseph Philip, the medical director of the PCICU at UFHealth. This research resulted in a publication, “Pulsatile Ventricular Assist Device as a Bridge to Transplant for the Early High-Risk Single Ventricle Physiology,” in the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Dr. Philip has been a vital part of her education of congenital heart disease and the various treatments to support the patients in the PCICU. She will continue to pursue research in pediatric cardiac intensive care, expanding her knowledge past the classroom.
