Sue Brierley-Hobson (Mrs) lives, works, and studies in Wales in the UK; she is a Registered Dietitian working in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and a PhD Candidate of Bangor University. Sue graduated with a First-Class Honours BSc degree in Nutrition and Dietetics in 2007, and completed a MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice at Bangor University, in 2018.
Sue is passionate about improving nutrition practice in hospital settings and has a keen interest in using research to advance understanding of how nutrition can improve patient outcomes. A particular area of research interest is in Critical Care Nutrition. Working with colleagues, Sue completed a before and after study using techniques to successfully improve nutrition practice in an intensive Care Unit. Published in 2019, the work has been well received: https://ccforum.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13054-019-2388-7
Experiences during this work informed Sue’s PhD. The aim of the work has been to develop an in-depth understanding and explanatory theory of how organisational history influences implementation behaviours within the context of path dependency. Sue uses a novel approach to understanding the weight of history in evidence implementation, which she is looking forward to discussing with SCCM colleagues in January 2024.
Further published work includes the investigation of intracellular mechanisms leading to cancer cell death caused by nutrient activity: https://academic.oup.com/biohorizons/article/1/1/9/232983?login=true
In 2020, Sue was awarded the prestigious British Dietetic Association Ibex Award for her significant contributions to the profession.
In her own time, Sue enjoys spending time walking in the beautiful Welsh countryside with her two working cocker spaniels, and her husband Lee, who is very supportive of her busy life!
