Clinical Associate Professor
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center
Cleveland, Ohio
I, Rana Hejal MD, clinical associate professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and the medical director of the Intensive Care Unit at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC) started in the American University of Beirut where I received My Medical Degree in 1988. I then moved to Cleveland, completed internal medicine residency and sub-specialty training in pulmonary and critical care medicine, received ABIM certification and joined the faculty at CWRU with clinical appointments at UHCMC and the Cleveland VA Medical Center (VAMC). In both hospitals, I pursued a wide range of clinical, educational and leadership roles, which I maintain, to this date at UHCMC.
I have been on the front lines at our institution leading the effort in caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients and preparing for the new reality imposed by a global pandemic. Standardizing critical care education across different disciplines is the goal. Best practice algorithms, simulation scenarios and proficiency standards are being developed and applied. In collaboration with emergency medicine colleagues, Quality Institution and pharmacy, we are focusing on, mechanical ventilation standards, quality improvement process in patient safety and utilizing informatics and systems engineering in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
I am a clinical educator who focuses on post graduate training. I loved and excelled at teaching clinical medicine as I practiced it. I was recognized many times by the house staff at UHCMC/CWRU as the Teacher of the Year. I was also presented the prestigious Master Clinician Award by the Department of Medicine and most recently The Distinguished Physician award by UHCMC
To summarize, I have been privileged to have taken the above described career path. I would love the opportunity to share my experience with a greater audience at SCCM
