Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a complication of hospitalization and critical care, especially for trauma patients. There is no clear guidance on the role of such disparate therapies as phenobarbital and gabapentin, dexmedetomidine and diazepam. A case-based review of current and emerging treatments for this dynamic problem will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Illustrate the effective use of phenobarbital as an initial bolus dose and primary therapy
  • Analyze emerging roles of ketamine, dexmedetomidine, and whatever else is hot for adjunctive therapy
  • Demonstrate optimal use of benzodiazepines to mitigate the risk of complications and adverse effects
