Filling a Bigger Tank: The Impact of Extracorporeal Circuits on Drug Dosing

Modern critical care uses technologies that increase patients' effective circulating volumes of distribution. Continuous renal replacement therapy; extracorporeal life support, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation; and plasma exchange all may lead to decreased drug concentrations, requiring modifications in dosing, including for such critical agents as antibiotics and sedatives. This session will review the mechanisms through which these systems impact medication dosing and strategies for clinicians to optimize that dosing.
