IV fluid (IVF) therapy is a mainstay of supportive critical care. Many aspects of fluid therapy continue to evolve. This session will introduce historical aspects of IVF that are fascinating and relevant to the practice of critical care, identify controversial trends in IVF therapy, introduce evidence-based novel fluid protocols (e.g., resuscitation, open abdomen management, intracranial hypertension therapy), and report on novel nutritional supports. The pharmacologic phenomenon of fluid creep will be explored, as well as ways to avoid it, including the top 10 fluid faux pas.
