Liver failure, including acute liver failure (ALF) and cirrhosis/acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) poses significant challenges for critical care clinicians. Advances in critical care have improved outcomes in ALF patients with improved rates of spontaneous recovery and in ACLF with the utility of liver transplantation. This session will highlight management issues and recent advances in ALF and ACLF, the role of liver transplantation in ALF and ACLF, and extracorporeal support in liver failure.
