With increasing prevalence of both opioid use and substance use disorders, practical management of these patients in the ICU can be challenging. Given the nature of acute changes in clinical status during critical illness, management of opioid use in patients with established tolerance may alter traditional sedation and analgesia plans. Additionally, continuation of traditional outpatient treatment modalities, like methadone and buprenorphine, may be needed while in a critical care setting. The speakers in this session will address how to effectively manage opioid use disorder and pain in the patient with OUD in the intensive care unit.
