Extracorporeal liver disease has changed the outcome of child in the last few years. Children with liver failure are at a risk of developing multi-organ failure. Extracorporeal liver assist devices have come up a big way in bridging these patients to liver transplantation. These patients are coagulopathic too. When the cardio-respiratory status is dire and all other medical interventions have been exhausted, is there a role for ECMO? How and when do we decide that a child should be considered as a candidate for ECMO ? Do the usual ECMO eligibility criteria apply for these children? This talk will address all these aspects in the trajectory of a patient with ALF.
