Trials of corticosteroids in acute respiratory distress syndrome and pneumonia have yielded conflicting results, and potential adverse effects remain concerns, particularly in some high-risk populations. Practitioners are frequently confronted with the decision to treat with corticosteroids or not in the absence of clear evidence. In this session, two speakers will use a pro/con format to present the cases for using corticosteroids in most cases versus in selected cases. The moderator will use case-based discussion to engage the speakers and attendees in patient-specific decision-making.
Learning Objectives:
Synthesize evidence supporting the use of corticosteroids for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or severe pneumonia
Identify potential harm caused by corticosteroids in patients with ARDS or severe pneumonia, particularly in selected patient groups
Apply evidence of corticosteroid use in ARDS or severe pneumonia to challenging clinical cases
