Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a complication of hospitalization and critical care, especially for trauma patients. There is no clear guidance on the role of such disparate therapies as phenobarbital and gabapentin, dexmedetomidine and diazepam. A case-based review of current and emerging treatments for this dynamic problem will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Illustrate the effective use of phenobarbital as an initial bolus dose and primary therapy
Analyze emerging roles of ketamine, dexmedetomidine, and whatever else is hot for adjunctive therapy
Demonstrate optimal use of benzodiazepines to mitigate the risk of complications and adverse effects
