The COVID-19 pandemic revealed several limitations of traditional publishing, including the inability to keep up with rapid iteration of data. Preprint manuscripts were shared and promoted via social media, resulting in rapid transfer of information but sometimes led to errors because these articles often lacked peer review. This interactive pro/con debate will address the role of preprints and sharing of information without the traditional gatekeepers of journal peer reviewers. Speakers will discuss how journals can improve publication speed and how preprints can improve reliability.
Learning Objectives:
Analyze the advantages and limitations of traditional peer-reviewed journal publishing
Analyze the advantages and limitations of preprints and viral dissemination of literature
Apply lessons learned from this debate toward interpreting studies
