Medication safety and proactive process improvements to minimize medication errors for high-risk medications, such as opioids, in critically ill patients have routinely shown to improve clinical outcomes. Additionally, analgosedation is a common practice in the ICU and is recommended by the PADIS guidelines. However, there is a fine balance between benefits and risks of analgosedation, especially when patients receive opioids as part of analgosedation in the ICU for prolonged periods, even in opioid-naïve patients. Speakers will identify methods to promote the safe use of opioids within the intensive care unit and raise awareness of how the implementation of opioid stewardship spans across care transitions. The audience will learn resources of successful opioid stewardship, implementation of multimodal analgesia in the ICU and how to optimize pain management from the intensive care unit through discharge.
