Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) use has increased dramatically and has become an essential component of assessing patients with shock and respiratory failure. Despite widespread use, accessibility, and significant decreases in cost of ultrasound equipment, acquisition of devices and image management systems remain major capital expenses. To achieve sustainability, professional and facility billing charges for services allow offset costs and over time become profitable. Currently, only a limited number of critical care programs can develop successful billing practices as part of ultrasound management.
Learning Objectives:
Describe strategies for establishing sustainable billing practices for ultrasound services
Select an approach to billing that is most suitable to critical care practice
Develop a business plan to support an ultrasound program
