Most ICU patients are anemic. Anemia is associated with worse outcomes and a necessity for red blood cell transfusion. ICU patients are a heterogeneous group with a broad spectrum of main diagnoses and comorbidities. Evidence-based transfusion trigger guidelines have been established and are dependent on comorbidities. Special attention has been paid to blood-saving measures and point-of-care diagnosis of coagulation disorders in ICU patients. This session will delve into the latest updates on transfusion measures and anemia management to protect patients at their most critical time. New blood product information is evidence-based around whole blood and alternatives when this resource is limited. The use of plasma for the prevention and treatment of coagulopathy and the reversal of anticoagulants will be highlighted.
