(1452248) Caring for Older Adults Across the Continuum of Critical Illness and Survivorship

In 2024, more than half of ICU patients will be aged 65 years and older. Most clinicians caring for older adults lack formal training in geriatrics. Older adults admitted to the ICU bring a degree of complexity that is not present in younger ICU patients. They are less likely to tolerate iatrogenic harm and face unique barriers to post-ICU recovery. Thus, an understanding of geriatrics principles is needed to provide a holistic, patient-centered approach to care across the continuum of critical illness and survivorship. Patients’ loved ones play an important role in the care of older physically impaired survivors of critical illness, often neglecting their own self-care, leading to symptoms of anxiety and depression. Speakers include aging-focused intensivists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals and will empower attendees with the knowledge needed to improve the management and recovery of older adults with critical illness and optimally support their loved ones.
