(1089) Video Education for Onboarding Trainees to Trauma Services May Improve Engagement and Experience

Introduction: Trainees from other residency programs rotate on the trauma service. The trauma service can be overwhelming due to the complex service operations. The purpose of this study was to provide trainees with short videos to enhance their time on the trauma service.

Methods: This prospective cohort study used Likert scale surveys. Trainees rotating from January 2022-June 2022 had routine onboarding without videos. From July 2022-December 2022, we provided the trainees with videos. At the end of each month, the trainees were provided with a survey. Survey questions included understanding of service goals/objectives, personal performance, and service-specific tasks (history and physical, tertiary survey, and discharging patients). Attending surgeons, advanced nurse practitioners, and senior general surgery residents also evaluated the trainees through similar surveys.

Results: Twenty-four trainees rotated on trauma services during this study period. There was a 92% response rate. Ten trainees were female (43.5%). Eight trainees rotated from the emergency department program (34.8%), with four trainees rotating from family medicine and orthopedics each (17.4%). Remaining trainees were from otolaryngology, transitional year and general surgery. Eleven trainees had prior trauma experience in medical school (47.8%). Most trainees strongly agreed the videos were helpful for all service tasks. Trainees had stronger engagement if they watched the videos (28.6% vs. 71.4%, p=.035). Overall, the trend was a better experience in the video group (not significant). The response rate evaluating the trainees was 62%. Engagement, effectiveness as a team member, and efficiency all trended towards improvement with video education (not significant). Trainees showed the most improvement with completion of tertiary surveys (70.3% vs. 86%, p=0.034).

Conclusions: Video-based education is a modern and effective tool. The trauma service is a complex service due to patient acuity, number of patients, and social circumstances. Onboarding with videos helps the trainee learn the service and have a tool for reference.
