(1188) Unlocking the Importance of ICU Respiratory Mechanics

Introduction: Mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a critical life-support intervention. However, the practices of respiratory mechanics among respiratory therapists (RTs) in ICUs vary significantly, reflecting a gap in understanding and application of these crucial parameters.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 71 RTs in ICUs. The participants were asked to rate the importance of different respiratory mechanics in managing mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU, with response options ranging from 'unimportant' to 'very important'.

Results: The survey was completed by 71 RTs in total. Among the participants, a slight majority were female, comprising 54.9% (39 individuals), while males constituted 45.1% (32 individuals) of the total respondents. Peak Inspiratory Pressure (PIP), Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP), and Pplat were rated as 'very important' by the majority of RTs (83.1%, 81.7%, and 77.5%, respectively). In contrast, respiratory mechanics such as Transpulmonary Pressure (PL) and Strain Index were given less importance.

Conclusions: This study highlights significant variations in the perceived importance of different respiratory mechanics among RTs working in ICUs in Saudi Arabia. The findings underscore the need for continuous education and training programs to harmonize the practices and optimize the outcomes for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU.
